2011 in Review

Why fold & put away laundry when I can write a blog post?

Today I ran my last run for the year.  16 miles; it wasn't pretty but it's over with.  Afterwards I decided to plug ole' Gus into Garmin Connect and get a total of my miles for the year.

1,656 miles and over 300 hours of running.  That's about 12 and a half days.  Mixed in there was 2 marathons, 3 half marathons, a 4-day charity run and several 5Ks.  Maybe next year I can hit 2,000???  (Ok, 1800 is much more reasonable.)  According to my Garmin Connect, that is 200 miles more than 2010, but I didn't get Gus until late January or February of last year, so the all of the miles weren't logged.

I made a couple of big changes in the home improvement area - new windows in August and a safer, more energy efficient, brightly colored front door in November.  I have three more big projects that I would like to do, but not sure which will come next.  I would like ceramic tile in my kitchen and I would also like to seriously renovate my two bathrooms.  All of them will be quite costly so there's no telling when I'll actually get my wishes fulfilled.

Another big development in 2011 that I am really excited about is a change at work.  I was given an opportunity to take a different position with my company.  I've been doing it for about a week and a half now.  It's very challenging but I really enjoy it.

Overall, 2011 has been a pretty good year.  I think it's important to focus on what I do have and know that it far outweighs what I don't have that I think I might need.  I can't wait to see what is in store for 2012!

I Saw a White Door and I Want to Paint it Green

My apologies to The Rolling Stones.

First I had this great idea to paint my front door a bright color thanks to this post at Young House Love.  However, I also knew that my current front door wasn't very safe nor was it energy efficient.  So I talked to my mom and decided that the best idea was to install a new door and then paint it.  My parents were nice enough to give me a new door and installation for my birthday.

Before we even had a new door bought, I started to play around with color ideas.  As much I loved John & Sherry's yellow door, I'm just not a yellow person.  Red doors are popular, but I didn't think it would go great with my red brick.  So I decided to go with one of my favorite colors, a bright appl-y green.  I went to Lowe's and Home Depot and collected several paint chips, and taped them to the front door to get a feeling.

Then came demolition and installation day.

I was slightly freaking out at this point.  Not a fan of having giant holes in my house!!

Being the home improvement expert that I am, I thought it was as simple as buying a new door, unscrewing the old one off its hinges and then attaching the new door.  Wrong.  Saint had to pull the molding off around the door inside, take off the old door, rip out the old frame and build all new stuff.  I hope I'm not losing you with all these technical terms.  I should also add that while he and my mom were installing the door, I was near-death with bronchitis and a sinus infection and was full of antibiotics and cough syrup so the details are fuzzy.

I found Stripey and Sage hiding in mommy's closet.  They don't care for home improvement projects.

Once it was finished, this is what it looks like from the inside.  Nice!

Remember, I am an advanced procrastinator, so it took me a few weeks to get around to actually painting the door.  I spent way too much time staring at paint chips, in all different kinds of light, but I finally made my decision - Sunny Dale from Lowe's.

Fun with painter's tape!  I don't have a lot of pictures of the actual painting process, but two coats did the trick.  Here's the finished product:

This is what it looks like most of the time, with the screen door closed.

... and with the door open.

Next, I wanted to hang something on the front door and went to Walmart looking for Command hooks.  Imagine my surprise to find these!

I knew these would be perfect.  Here it is on the door:

Sorry about the shadow.  Almost invisible!

Now for the piece de resistance: for my birthday, Cassie bought me a cross that we saw at Christmas Jubiliee.  It's perfect - pink and it has my name on it!  And it's accented with blue and green polka dots, almost a perfect match for the door!

I love it!

Shopping Like It's My Job

The only thing I love more than running is shopping, so I played hooky today so I could do some Christmas shopping.  Ok, I didn't really play hooky.  I actually used up my last vacation day for the year before I lost it.  It was kinda fun to sleep late in the middle of the week, and I went for a 7 mile run this morning.  Then I got to have a long, chatty lunch with Courtney before we hit the mall.

First thing I did was visit the Salvation Army Angel Tree in the mall and I adopted an angel.  This is my first time to buy Christmas presents for my very own angel.  Years ago, when I was in high school, my parents participated in a toy drive that was organized by a local Harley shop.  For several years, my mom and I would go buy Christmas presents for kids they had drawn in a process similar to adopting an angel from the Angel Tree.  Those kids were usually residents at St. Mary's and Wilmer Hall.  We had a lot of fun buying the presents and then Mama would tell me about their trip to deliver the presents to the children.  Since then, I've participated in similar projects at school and work, where we would adopt angels or needy families and collect gifts and/or money to help make their Christmas a little brighter.  But this year, I wanted to do something on my own.

(I redacted the name because I don't know the rules about privacy and stuff.)

I looked at the angels on the tree and I picked this little girl because she wanted Barbies.  Then I hit up Target because they were having a pretty good sale on toys this week.  It was a lot of fun and I realized that Barbies have changed a lot since I played with them.  You know, in the last 5 years.  ;)  I also realized that toys are crazy expensive.  To all my friends with kids, I say God Bless You.  I also got her a few clothes too.  This is what I came home with:

It's kinda hard to tell from the picture, but I got her a jacket, a dress and leggings, a two-pair set of jammies (with a giraffe hugging a monkey - so cute!), a super cool ballerina Barbie (her feet move!) and two Barbie dresses.  I am so excited!  I hope she likes it and I pray she and her family have a good Christmas.

I was also able to make a lot of progress on my Christmas shopping for my friends and family, too.  I'm not done yet but I feel good about how much I got accomplished.

Also, I don't by any means fancy myself as a couponing/savings expert, but I got a few good (non-Christmas present) deals today at Target that I'm pretty proud of.  I had seen that Target had a $5 gift card with purchase on Olay Pro-X Brush Heads.  http://www.target.com/p/Olay-ProX-Brush-Head-Refill-For-Cleansing-System/-/A-13109604  Plus, I had a $1 off coupon from Walgreens, and Target honored it!  Target also had a $5 gift card with purchase on Starbucks coffee. http://weeklyad.target.com/mobile-al-36606/categories?sort=title Coffee?  Yes, please!  Now I can send in for the $5 Starbucks gift card rebate I read about here: http://starbucks.rewardpromo.com/  So, that's $10 from Target and $5 from Starbucks that I earned today.  Go me!!!

Quote of the Day

I will not divulge who said this nor the context in which it was said, but it humored me greatly:

"Me and bat sh** crazy don't mix."

No, I am not the one who said it.  Although I may adopt it as my personal motto.  I probably can find a reason to use it at least once a day.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 30

Today I am thankful for my Aunt Angie and Uncle Jesse - today is their 27th (?) anniversary!  They are so sweet and I love them dearly.  I am so lucky to have such a wonderful aunt and uncle!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 29

Today I am thankful for busy days at work because that means job security!

I am also thankful that November is almost over because it's tough writing a blog a day.  I don't know how my favorite bloggers do it!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 28

Today I am thankful for running buddies that keep me motivated on cold, damp nights.  And early mornings and humid long runs and for any other excuse I can come up with. Trust me, there are plenty!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 27

I am thankful for Sunday mornings because it is usually the only day of the week that I get to sleep as late as I want to. Then I can drink my coffee and read the paper before it's time to start getting ready for church.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 26

I am thankful for my education.  I may not have had the most "exciting" college experience by going to a small private college, but almost all of my college expenses were covered by scholarship.  I am very fortunate not to have the burden of student loans.  I received a wonderful education and I really enjoyed my time at the University of Mobile.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 25

Today I am thankful that my job gives me the day after Thanksgiving off.  I was able to sleep in, sip my coffee on the couch, do a little online shopping and then go for a run.  Today was also great because I got to see my Cherokee for a little bit.  The whole living 8 hours apart puts a cramp in our hanging out time.

While most people were "celebrating" Black Friday, I was having Green Friday!  I put a first coat of green paint on my front door.  I got started late in the day so it was dark by the time I finished.  I can't wait to see what it looks like in daylight.  I hope it turns out as well as I have been imagining.  Because it will be really inconvenient to have to go back and get new paint and then start all over.  Pictures to come!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 24

Today I am thankful for Thanksgiving, and for the reason we celebrate the holiday.  I am thankful for the opportunity to spend the day with my family, and that I have family members who are good cooks.  I am not one of those family members.  I am also thankful for the birthday cake my Mama made me!  I brought home some yummy leftovers, and I will be thankful for those over the weekend.

At this point in the day, I am so thankful to be home and that it is time for bed and I can sleep late in the morning!!!!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 23

Today I am thankful that we got off an hour early from work.  It gave me a chance to go the grocery store.  I'm also thankful that I got out of Winn Dixie in just around an hour.  Not bad at all for the day before Thanksgiving.  And it was the site of a true Thanksgiving Miracle - I finally found my Sugar Free Peppermint Mocha Coffee Mate!!!!  Definitely a bright spot in my day... my week... my month... lol

I am thankful for Starbucks.  Skinny lattes and cake pops and earning points for free drinks.  It is everything I love under one roof.

I am thankful that my good friend Shelley and her kiddos are coming home (to Louisiana) over Christmas holidays.  I haven't seen her since March of 2010.  I can't believe it's been that long.

Well, it's time to get ready for bed.  Tomorrow is a big day!!!  10 mile run, then a 2 hour drive to Andalusia, Thanksgiving feasting with the fam and then heading back home for bedtime.  Whew, that made me tired just typing it!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 22

I am thankful for the rain tonight.  I wish we had gotten a little more during the summer though... maybe my yard wouldn't look so awful.  Yep, it was the lack of rain that did it.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 21

So I'm totally going take the easy route tonight and be thankful for my 30 years on this earth.  I am thankful for my parents who got me here, and I am thankful for the love of all my family and friends throughout my life.  I am thankful for the lessons I have learned and the experiences I have had.  God has blessed me far more than I deserve!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 20

Today I am very thankful to have so many friends celebrate my birthday with me.  They made me feel so very special and loved!  I am so blessed to have these people in my life.  I only hope that they know how much I appreciate them and value their friendship.

“There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.”
― Jane AustenNorthanger Abbey

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 19

I am thankful for technology, even though I may be a little too dependent on it.  I can't run without my Gus, I watch 90% of my television on my DVR and I check my cell phone (including email and social networking) a gajillion times a day.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 18

I am thankful for my grandparents and that I had such a close relationship to them when I was growing up.  I have so many wonderful memories from the time I spent with them.  I spent a lot of summer days at their house and after school time and they took me on many vacations and weekend trips.  My Grandmama used to sew for me all the time; she made costumes and clothes and hemmed every pair of pants or skirt I brought her.  We played pretend, and marathon games of Monopoly, and stayed up late watching movies and then she would tell me stories until I fell asleep.  I am so blessed to have my grandparents, and I love them so much.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 17

Today I am thankful that God gave me small feet... 'cause I always end up with one in my mouth.  Of course if they were larger maybe it would happen less often.

I'm also thankful for bonus checks.  And I'm thankful that November is my birthday month, which means I get lots of birthday coupons.  Hence the need for the bonus checks. ;)

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 16

Today, I was thankful that Oakley sang the rain away so I could run after work.  I wonder if we can teach him a song to get rid of humidity?

http://www.thefrisky.com/2011-11-15/10-reasons-im-thankful-to-be-single-this-thanksgiving/

I recently read this article online and it got me to thinking.  Mostly because I, too, am single... again... still... at the holidays.  Being single isn't all bad - I have complete control of the remote and the thermostat at all times.  Some of the points are kind of funny, but they make sense too.  Most importantly, it reminded me that I am thankful to be single.  That's not to say I don't want to be in a relationship.  But there must be a reason for me to be in this place in my life, and I am thankful for that - whatever that reason is.  Every day I pray that God will show me my way in life, and I know that He will.  Until then, I am going to be thankful for everything I have and not waste any time lamenting over what I don't have that I think I need.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 15

Yesterday I was very much thankful that my nose stopped running.  TMI, I know.  But it was a huge deal.  Just a few days of being under the weather can seem like an eternity.

I'm also thankful for random dinners at Los Rancheros in which I always leave with a wealth of knowledge I didn't even know I needed.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 14

Yes, I am aware that I am behind on expressing my thankfulness.  I guess I'm thankful that no one reads my blog!  haha

I am thankful that I have stayed friends with the same group of girls from high school.  I know it may sound silly, but in the last several years we have managed to get together a few times a year, but always every year at Christmas.  We also get together for all the important events like weddings and baby showers and stuff.  It's really great to know that after so many years we are still friends and are still there for each other.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 13

Today our church held its 72nd Homecoming Celebration.  We had a wonderful service and then had a fellowship lunch afterwards.  I am very thankful for my church and all the sweet people that go there.  I love my church family!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 12

Today I am thankful for my little monsters.  Even though they drive me crazy on a daily basis and I'm pretty sure their goal is to destroy my house, I still love them.  They're my sweet little furry babies.  One of my favorite sounds in the world is Cool Daddy's purring.

Marine Corps Marathon

It's been almost two weeks since I ran the Marine Corps Marathon.  Of course I am exceedingly talented at procrastination, so the timing of this post is right on schedule.

I was really looking forward to the trip, even though I knew it was going to be quick and I probably wouldn't have a lot of time for sightseeing.  Fortunately, I had been to Washington, D.C. before so I have seen a lot of the sights.

Cecilia & I flew into Baltimore on Friday.  I had never been to Baltimore before.  We had planned to check out the downtown area, but when we got there it was pretty dang cold and windy.  We did happen upon the Occupy Baltimore camp, though.

We considered joining them, but they wanted you to make a sign and join a committee, and that was a little more commitment than we bargained for.  Later that afternoon, Cil's friend Abby (who works in Baltimore) was nice enough to drive us to our hotel in Arlington.  After we got settled into our hotel, we set off to find dinner.  Along the way, we found a Marine Corps Marathon sign that had been set up.

We bought those scarves earlier the day in Baltimore because it turned out to be colder than we anticipated.  I am convinced that it is my fate that at some point on any vacation trip I take, I will have to make a trip to Walmart and/or Target.  So later that evening we went to Target to stock up on a few toiletries and extra layers for the run.  Thanks to Heather's idea, I bought some men's socks and later made arm warmers for myself, Cil & Heather for the race on Sunday.

Saturday was Expo Day!  Saturday was also dreary, cold, rainy and eventually snowy.  To be completely honest, that weather situation is not good for your psyche the day before a marathon.

Waiting outside the expo... in the rain.

Inside the expo... those are all the vendors in the background.  The place was PACKED!  I shall plead the fifth in regards to how much money was spent at the expo.  Let's just say Chase called me a couple days later to make sure my card had not been stolen.  (Where were ya when I was spending that money??)

After the expo, Cil & I decided to brave the cold and, by that point, snow to walk around the Mall and check out the monuments.

It is kinda difficult to capture snow on camera, but this picture of the Capitol building gives you an idea.  It wasn't sticking, but it was coming down pretty steady over several hours.

We visited the World War II Memorial, which I think has been built since my previous trip to Washington, D.C.  It was really beautiful.  There is so much more to it than I could capture in just one picture.

It was such a blessing that the weather on Sunday was a major improvement over Saturday.  Of course, we had to get up crazy early so it was dark and freezing, but the rain and snow was gone.  Once the sun came out, it was a beautiful day.

Here we are before the race started!  We had on a few extra layers that we planned to get rid of along the race course.  I had a momentary freak out before the race when I realized that my iPod did not intend to function that day.  I think somehow when I charged my battery before I left home that it actually sucked the life out of Pinky.  But, it was too late to turn back at that point.

I have since read that around 22,000 people started the race.  It was kinda crowded getting started and took some getting used to maneuvering through the people.  Somewhere around 3 miles in, we crossed a bridge that was iced over a bit.  It was actually scary because my feet were sliding underneath me, and I decided to walk until I got past the ice.  (I have no shame in admitting I'm terrified of falling.)

We had a great plan that the three of us would stick together and pace off each other, but the plan went awry.  Around mile 4, there was a water stop and we got separated by the crowd.  I could see Heather going ahead and caught a glimpse of her but there were too many people to catch up with her.  It was so sad.  :(  However, we still had at least 22 miles to go so Cecilia and I kept plugging on.

There was another little mishap as we were running through Georgetown.  We had jumped on a sidewalk to have a little extra room and Cecilia alerted me to a fire hydrant in the way.  We both managed to avoid it, but probably 3 or 4 people behind us we heard a thud.  I glanced back real quick to see someone on the ground.  I turned back around to focus on the road ahead of me, because if I had seen blood it would not have been a good situation.  I really hope the guy is ok.

The rest of the race went on without incident.  There was just a lot of running, several water stops, a few Gu's consumed and a lot of spectators.  We ran past all the major monuments - Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr, Washington, Capitol building, Holocaust museum.  Right around mile 20 we got on (what I think was) an interstate overpass.  That was about 2 1/2 miles of no spectators and not much to see.  It was kinda tough.  But then we got into Crystal City which was a big morale booster, although I tried not to think about the fact that I was running right past our hotel.

Finally, after 20-something miles, I caught Heather!  I spotted her about a half mile before the finish.  Even though we had gotten separated early on, the three of us ended finishing around the same time!  Which is really great because we were able to take finisher pictures together.

Here is my super cool medal!

The rest of Sunday and Monday was spent moving very slowly.  Monday morning Cammie, Larry & I did get out to go visit the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and another memorial I was not aware of that honored the signers of the Declaration of Independence.  Let me just say that for a city that invited several thousand people to come run a marathon, it has entirely too many steps/stairs to climb.  It is very painful.

As much fun as it was to run the Marine Corps Marathon, I was so very glad to get home and sleep in my own bed.  I was not so happy about one souvenir I brought home with me, which was a miserable cold that I am still trying to get over.  Marathon soreness was much easier to get rid of!

So now the big question is... what's the next race???

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 11

Today I am thankful for all the veterans who have served our country.  Without them, we would not enjoy the many freedoms we have today.  We must never forget the sacrifices that have been made, and we must remember that we live in one of the greatest countries in the world.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 10

Tonight was one of my favorite nights of the month - Birthday Night!  One night a month our running club celebrates all the birthdays for the month.  I already love it because I get to run, eat Mexican and then have birthday cake.  But tonight was even better because this is my birthday month!

Today I am thankful for all the friends I have made since I started running.  They are such an important part of my life now that I can't imagine what it would be like without them.  For one thing, I would have one less reason to eat cake every month and that would just be tragic.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 9

Today I am thankful for my baby cousin, Jay.  Today is his 18th birthday, so he's not exactly a baby anymore.  He's extra special, not just because he's the youngest of all the cousins but also because he's the only boy.  He's endured a lot of painful hours of dress up in his life!

I remember the morning he was born.  I was staying at my grandparents and my Grandmama had just woke me up to get ready for school.  She called the hospital to check on my aunt because she had gone to the hospital in the middle of the night.  When she got off the phone she told me the news - a Baby Boy!  I ran to the other bedroom where my Papa and Jessica were still asleep and told them the baby was here!  Before school, Grandmama took me to the hospital to see him.  I got to see him first!!

I am so glad he's mine though; he's smart, kind, thoughtful, talented and very handsome.  I think it's rare to find that many good qualities in a guy his age.  (It's rare to find that in guys my age, but that's a-whole-nother blog post.)  I love him very much and I am so blessed to have such a wonderful cousin!

All the cousins last Christmas.  Birthday Boy on the Left!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 8

Today's Bible verse on my Daily Bible app was "Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!" Psalm 107:1.

I thought that was very appropriate for today.  I am thankful for God's love and his many blessings in my life.  I'm even thankful for those blessings that may not seem so great at the time, but I know they are all part of a plan that even I can't micromanage.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 7

Better late than never, right?

Yesterday, I was thankful for the nice pharmacist at Walgreens that called around until he found my prescription at another store.  It was just like a commercial!  I feel like I should write a thank you note in crayon or something.  Also, I am thankful for insurance.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 6

Today I am thankful for a quiet day at home with cold medicine and DVR shows to watch while I tried to rest and get well.  Fingers crossed I feel better tomorrow and can get back into my regular routine!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 5

Today I am thankful for my mom & stepdad and all they do to help me with my house.  Four years ago, Garry put a new metal roof on my house and covered all of my soffits and overhangs with vinyl and metal to protect them from rotting.  Today, for my birthday present (in 16 days!) they replaced my front door.

It's really sad how pitiful my original front door was.  It was hollow (like an interior door) and it turns out someone had actually sawed off the bottom of the door!  The door didn't even seal like it was supposed to, so I'm sure that let out an unknown sum of the A/C and heat I've been paying for all these years.  Truthfully I did not feel very safe with such a flimsy door out front.

The new door is fiberglass.  It is much more sturdy and energy efficient.  I'm pretty sure it's eligible for a tax credit (yay!).  The things you get excited about in your old age.

As for the color... yuck.  This beigy color is the base/primer color that it comes in, but I will be changing that soon.  Hopefully next weekend!  But even with the ugly color I am still so excited about my new door!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 4

Today I am thankful for my job.  I have been there for 8 years, and I think I am very fortunate to have found a home there.  Ok, so there are a lot of days that I wish I didn't have to get up and go to work, and sometimes I get frustrated and stressed out, but every day I am thankful for my job.  I work for a great company and have great bosses.  And recently, they've given me a wonderful opportunity and I'm so very excited about the upcoming year!  Terrified, but excited!  2012 will be a great year!

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 3

Today I am thankful for having a roof over my head, a car to drive and always having plenty to eat and drink.  This is just a short list of every day comforts that most of us take for granted, but there are many people who have to do without.

On a selfish note, I would be even more thankful if the Facebook photo uploader would work properly.  I've been trying for two evenings now to create a photo album from my trip this weekend, but the uploader isn't cooperating.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 2

Today I am thankful for Nyquil.  I haven't been feeling so hot since the marathon.  Apparently, between airports and public transportation and running a race with 40,000 people, I may have picked up a germ or something.  Whoodathunkit.  Anyway, I decided to take a dose of Nyquil and go to bed early.  Hopefully I will feel better tomorrow.

Thirty Days of Thankful - Day 1

It's November 1st and I see many people are sharing things they are thankful for.  I think out of all the crazy Facebook fads, this is a good one to follow.

Today I am thankful for good friends who care about what's important to me, or at least they do a good job of pretending to care.  ;)

It's That Time Again!

I leave tomorrow morning heading to Washington, DC... Sunday morning is the Marine Corps Marathon!  I am probably about 65% excited and 35% nervous.  This is my third marathon, but this will also be the largest I've ever run.  43,000 people have registered for this race!

I am looking forward to getting to do a little sightseeing in Washington, DC.  The only time I have ever been to DC was while I was in college, and that was back in 2002.  I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to see it again.  I am also really excited about the sights I will see along the race course.  I'm going to take a disposable camera with me and try to take pictures along the way.

Well I need to finish packing.  Gotta get up early tomorrow and head to the airport!

Forgiveness

Yesterday at church, we had a guest speaker.  He is a lay leader from a church in the area.  He chose to speak about forgiveness, and as he got started I thought to myself "well this is certainly a topic I need to pay attention to."  I know that I am not a perfect person, and I can easily identify a laundry list of my own faults.  One of those faults happens to be holding onto to something that has angered me or hurt my feelings.  I have a really hard time with the part where you are supposed to forgive and not forget; I need to work on learning how to separate the two.

The part of his message that really spoke to me was a story about a man who had an estranged relationship with his parents and had come to our speaker for advice.  He basically had an attitude of "if they want to reconcile, then why haven't they come to me?"  Mr. Hand told him that he should accept that responsibility and contact his parents to initiate a reconcilitation.  He promptly did, and was able to repair his relationship with his parents before his mother passed away shortly thereafter.  Boy did I need to hear that!  That is an important lesson not only about forgiveness, but about relationships in general.  As Christians we believe "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," but when someone is not treating you as well as you would like, it's easy to lower your standards and not put out the effort that you should.  It got me to thinking that maybe I need treat others better than they treat me.  I just pray that God knows what is in my heart and helps me to be a more forgiving and kind person.

If Your Eyes are the Windows to Your Soul, then are Windows the Eyes to Your House?

Well, it's been a whole two weeks since I had my new windows installed!  Good news: I am still in the front running for Procrastinator of the Year.

So, this is what the house looked like with the old windows - but with the clean awnings :) -

First of all, I'm not really sure why Mama suggested I get new windows.  The duct tape was holding the old ones together just fine.

I didn't do that, FYI.  That has been like that since I moved it.  I'm not sure which is worse.  :/  My mom was nice enough to come and supervise the window installation so I did not have to take the day off from work.  She took a few pictures for me.

Here's the finished product!  I think it looks great!

Now I can't wait to get the next power bill?  (Who ever says that??)

Five Rules to Remember in Life

One of my co-workers sent this to me today.  It was so funny I had to share!

Five Rules to Remember in Life:

1.) Money cannot buy happiness but it’s more comfortable to cry in a Mercedes than on a bicycle.
2.) Forgive your enemy but remember the bastard’s name.
3.) Help someone when they are in trouble and they will remember you, when they're in trouble again!
4.) Many people are alive only because it’s illegal to shoot them.
5.) Alcohol does not solve any problems, but then neither does milk. :)

Jessica's Big Day

My Sissy has been married for two whole weeks!  I can't believe it.  It was such a pretty day, and the ceremony and reception turned out very well.  I am so happy for Jessica & Justin.  Fortunately, my mom took a few pictures with my camera because the "official" wedding photos are not in yet.

Movie Star Kiss!  Just like Carrie & Berger.

Me & Jessica at the reception.

Because I was the Maid of Honor, and because Jessica means so much to me, I wanted to say a few words to honor her on her special day.  This is what I tried to say - although it came out more as a blubbery mess:

Good evening. I'm Joy, Jessica's maid of honor and her eldest cousin. We spent a lot of time together growing up; so much so that we're more like sisters. Like sisters will do, we had our fair share of squabbles in our younger years; often to the dismay of our parents and grandparents. I remember one time, Papa was telling me how I needed to be patient and try harder to get along because we would always have each other and one day we would be best friends. At the time, I remember thinking that I didn't even really like her that much and there was no way we would ever be friends. (haha) But he was right, and here we are several years later and she is one of my best friends.
So I am very honored to be a part of her and Justin's special day. As some of you may know, Jessica is a teeny bit obsessed with Disney movies, so it is only fitting that she has found her Prince Charming. Justin is so loving and kind and thoughtful to Jessica, and it is wonderful that they have found each other. I know we are all very glad that Justin has joined our family. My wish for them is that the happiness that they are experiencing today is just a glimpse of all the good times they have ahead of them.
It was a beautiful today for a special couple.  I love them so much!

The Big TO DO List

If you know me, you know I love lists.  I have lists at work, lists at home.  Lists saved to my computer, my phone and then sometimes I write them down too for good measure.  My lists often have sub lists.  Yep, it's a sickness.  I also wonder if it is a procrastination tool.

These are a few things I would like to accomplish on the home improvement front, and some things that I have already accomplished (just because it makes me feel good to have a list with a few items crossed off):

Replace Dishwasher (2004/2005?)
Replace Roof (May 2007)
Clean Awnings (June 2011)
Replace Windows (August 2011)
Fix Shower Drain (August 2011)
Replace Front Door (November 2011)
Replace Furnace / Install Heat Pump (February 2012)
Replace Gas Water Heater w/Electric one
Replace Shower / Tub in Main Bathroom
Install Shower in Half Bath (Would that make it a 3/4 Bath?)
Install Ceramic Tile in the Kitchen
Clean Out / Organize All Closets
Replace Toilet in Pink Bathroom
Improve Flower Beds on Side & Front of House

So there we have it.  I'm sure I'll be adding more to it, but hopefully I'll be marking a lot off as well.  Wish me luck!

Makeover My Soul

Just as Cher Horowitz decided she needed to makeover her soul, I have decided I need to makeover my... house.  Which I think will have positive effect on my general wellbeing.  I've been in my house for quite sometime, and there are several improvements I have been needing/wanting to make but haven't quite gotten around to.  What can I say, when it comes to procrastination, I got skillz.  Anyway, lately I have following this awesome blog - http://www.younghouselove.com/.  It has really inspired me to tackle some projects around the house.  Unfortunately I was still lacking in motivation.

Yesterday, I placed an order for some new windows.  My current windows are probably original to the house, which was built some 50-60 years ago.  They are the crank-out kind, if that tells you anything.  The new windows promise to be energy efficient (= saving money on the utility bills) and sound-blocking (= no more listening to my neighbor's phone conversations or what she is playing on her car stereo).  I am so excited!  They should be here in about 4-6 weeks, which provides me with a deadline, which is darn close to motivation.

Obviously, I can't complete all the projects in that short period of time (more on the project ideas later).  First of all, I don't have the funds.  Second, I still have a full time job and don't have the manpower.  So my general plan is to get more organized and get rid of stuff that I don't need/want/use anymore.  Having a more organized and less cluttered house will make it easier for the window installers do their job.

Today's task, however, was an exterior one.  To say I'm not a big fan of outside work is an understatement.  Especially outside work in the middle of summer.  But, there was something that had been nagging me for some time and I wanted to get it accomplished before the windows got here.  The awnings over my windows, which are supposed to be white, have gotten quite grungy over the years.  When we replaced the roof in 2007, we had to take the awnings off so my mom & I took the opportunity to powerwash and repaint the awnings (well, mostly mom).

So here's the before:

The front:

And the side:

I had a very good supervisor.  Ok, so maybe he's not much of a supervisor, but he's the cutest dang cat I've ever seen.

I used a car washing brush so as not to damage the paint, and a combination of scrubbing bubbles and dish soap.  After what really only added up to a couple hours (maybe 2 1/2) of work, I had this!

I'm not trying to pass it off as perfect, but I think it definitely qualifies for 95% improvement.  I am absolutely thrilled with my work.  I also took the time to weed eat the yard a little.  It has been so dry lately that my grass is not growing but miraculously (sarcasm) the weeds still are.  I feel great about the progress I made today and hope I can stay on that track!

The end is in sight!

Last night Blue Team finished around midnight, then we drove about an hour to our campground. By the time we got our RV situated, and I got a shower, I was crawling in bed around 2 am. We extended the slideouts on the RV and we got about 5 1/2 hours sleep so I was feeling quite spoiled when I woke up this morning!
At breakfast, Ms. Susan was telling us they had packed today's lunch and tomorrow's breakfast for us, because the next time we see them will be at the Battleship! I cannot believe we are a little over 24 hours away from the end! It made me a little sad.
Those crazy Red Teamers decided to throw an impromptu wedding reception on the side of the road this morning. Katie & Derek are getting married in July, so Katie had on an all white running outfit with veil and bouquet and Derek had a bowtie. We all shook our booties before we started running again. Only bad thing - there was no cake! :(
I've already run once since Blue Team took over, and I'll be driving the chase van on the next segment. I'm planning to run a couple more legs before we quit for the day.
I'm just amazed how this has exceeded my expectations and cannot imagine not being involved again next year!

Day 2!

Blue Team ran last night from 8:30 pm until 5 this morning. Most of it was a long Highway 78 in Mississippi, then we turned on County Road 15. I think. Heck it was at an hour that I only see if I happen to get up in the middle of the night to potty. I could be wrong. First of all, there is a crazy amount of traffic even at that hour! Thanks to our wonderful chase van driver and the driver if the deputy car for keeping us safe! Last night we were also joined by the New Albany PD and the Union County SO who were kind enough to follow us for several miles and keep an eye on us.
The sleep deprivation has become a reality. If you aren't running or driving, then you get in the RV and drive ahead 6 miles. Then you have maybe 45 minutes that you can close your eyes and/or nap if you can. I decided last night that being in the RV on the side of the road with big trucks flying by is much scarier than running along the side of the road with big trucks flying by. After our segment was over we ate breakfast and drove to a campground where we were able to get showers and a good 2 1/2 hour nap!
We've had lunch and now we're waiting for Red Team to meet us. We'll be running until midnight!

And they're off!

Wow today was something else! We toured St. Jude Hospital this morning before officially starting the relay. I learned so much about the history of the hospital and what they do here.
On the way up here yesterday I asked how/why Danny Thomas came to found St. Jude Hospital. I got an abbreviated explanation, and today I learned more about it. His acting career had not taken off so he prayed to St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes "Show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine." After his career became more established he decided to build a hospital for underprivileged children. Today, the hospital sits on a 65+ acre campus and employs close to 3000 people. There are 78 in-patient beds, and they have 3 long-term housing facilities for patients and their families.
I did not know what to expect going in to the hospital, but I don't think it was anything like I had imagined. It doesn't smell or feel like a hospital. Every waiting room has a different theme and the detail of the decorations are just amazing.
I learned that St. Jude has its own pharmaceutical research department because the pharmaceutical companies would lose money if they tried to develop the medications that St. Jude is working to create. I learned St. Jude has the biggest sickle cell department in the country. And just because a child may not actually receive treatment at St. Jude, it is very likely that the treatment they receive elsewhere in the country was developed at St. Jude.
It was so humbling as we toured the hospital and received thank yous from employees and patients for the fundraising we have done, and for the journey we aelre about to undertake. A few patients and their parents came outside to see us off. Even though I felt like I haven't done much to help, I definitely know it is appreciated.
I feel so privileged to now be a part of St. Jude on the Bay, which is the organization from Mobile that has been working to raise money for St. Jude Hospital. They helped to build the gift shop, from which the proceeds from sales go back to the hospital. They have also recently commissioned a statue of Danny Thomas which stands near the entrance of the hospital. Mr. Zoghby also told us this morning that students from McGill Toolen had a fundraiser during Lent, and they asked the students to donate at least $10. The students raised over $15k,with half going to St. Jude and the other half going to an organization for unwed mothers. I am so proud of what Mobilians are doing!
The Red Team took off at noon. Katie & Emily are leading the way for our adventure. I'm on the Blue Team and we will begin running around 8 tonight. I cannot wait!

Shavasana

I love going to yoga on Wednesday night.  It's a nice break from all the running I do.  And the instructor is the best, although I am a little biased.  ;)
One of the last things we do before class ends is Shavasana, or "corpse pose."  It's a time of relaxation and transition to go back to our busy lives.  Every time we conclude class with shavasana I am reminded of when I was little and my Grandmama would try to get me to go to sleep.  She would tell me to lie still and close my eyes and then she would say "sleep little one eye, sleep little two eye" and she would name all the body parts - mouth, arms, legs, etc.  This is so funny to me because I am pretty sure my Grandmama has never done a minute of yoga in her life!  And if she heard me use the word "shavasana" she would probably say "God Bless You"!  I guess she's a little more wordly than any of us ever imagined.

Grandparents

Tonight I went to pay my respects to a good friend who lost her grandfather earlier this week.  This got me to thinking about own grandparents and how there is no way to know how much longer you have with your loved ones.  My grandparents have been such an important part of my life.  For many years, they were a part of my daily life.  I would stay with them during the day before I was old enough for school, and then I would stay there during summer break.  Grandmama would pick me up after school and take me to Dairy Queen.  Papa would take me to Hardee's on weekend mornings because Grandmama like to sleep late.  They took me on car and RV trips every summer.  My Grandmama was my very best friend; I could talk to her about anything.

Now their health is declining.  My Grandmama is not the same funny, energetic lady she used to be, and my Papa spends his time and energy worrying about her and caring for her.  And it makes me so sad.  But at the same time I feel so incredibly blessed to have so many years of memories with them.  They have been such a special part of my life, and will always have a huge part of my heart.
